Smart Goals are Timely

During your goal setting and while you are creating your smart goals, think of timeliness. You may want a number of goals for your online business but the timing must be right for the goals to work.

In business online and off line timing is very important to the business. If your timing is off, you may completely miss the boat. You may create what you wanted but it is no longer effective.

For Example

Your online business wants to create more traffic and conversions. So one goal is to create an effective PPC campaign about your product. Another gaol is to produce the product you want to sell.

Your goal to produce the product is set for the first 4 months of the year. And the PPC campaign is set to start in the 5th month of the year and continue until the end of the year.

However you product production is delayed by 6 months and will not be completed until October. If you start the PPC campaign on time, you will be wasting time and money.

Another example – you have an invitation to start selling as an affiliate a new product that you really like. So you start to set you your affiliate process to sell the product. It takes you 2 months to get it ready and then you begin to sell. Unfortunately the product is no longer available, it sold out during the first month.

Timing is very important to your business and your smart goals.

Until the next time,

Smart Goals are Realistic

In your goal setting for your online business be sure your goals are realistic. Don't make goals that are not attainable or not related to the reality of your business.

You must have a chance to meet the goal in the time frame allowed. If it is impossible to reach the goal then is it unrealistic.

Having stretch goals is OK as long as there is a reasonable expectation that the goals can be reached in the time allowed.

Unrealistic goals will defeat the whole purpose of setting goals. If no one believes that the goals are realistic, they will not even try to meet them.

Set realistic smart goals and take action to attain them.

Attainable Smart Goals

Smart goals are attainable. That means that it is reasonable to think that the goal over the time allowed could be reached with reasonable effort.

The goal maybe a stretch to reach but no one feels that it is impossible to reach in the time allowed. If you feel that the goal is unattainable then you are defeated before you started.

You want to work for the goal but you want to believe you can reach it. It is a reasonable goal for your business.

Example

You have a website that gets 100 unique visitors per month. You have had a very active marketing plan in place for over a year. You just have not been able to get more than 100 unique visitors per month.

Now you need more visitors to make you online business grow. So you set your yearly goal to increase the unique visitor per month by 2000%. Is that an attainable goal? Perhaps if you know a new method of marketing that will bring in a significant number of unique visitors each month. But in most cases this is an unattainable goal.

You own the online business. You make the goals. You know what is attainable or not.

Until the next time,

Goals Should Be Measurable

Smart goals are the type of goals that can work for your online business. It is important that you understand each part of the smart goal.

In the last post I talked about smart goals – specific. Being specific means that the goal is narrowed down to it's essence.

Goals Should Be Measurable

Smart goals are the type of goals that can work for your online business. It is important that you understand each part of the smart goal.

In the last post I talked about smart goals – specific. Being specific means that the goal is narrowed down to it's essence.

Next it should be measurable. You must be able to measure the goal and your progress to reaching that goal. Without being measurable you will never know when you have reached it.

Some examples of being measurable

You goal is to increase your autoresponder sign-ups by 50% by December 31, 2009. You currently have 100 sign-ups. So your goal is 150 sign-ups. Each month you measure how many sign-ups you have and compare that to the goal.

Your goal is to increase your unique visitors to your site by 50% by year end. You open your Google analytic's account and determine your current rate of unique visitors. Currently you have 200 unique visitors per month and your goal is 300 unique visitors. Then each month you check your traffic and see if you are on your way to meeting your goal.

So set up your smart goals and start to measure it.

Until the next time,

Goals Should Be Specific

By specific I mean they should be as detailed as possible. And written so that no one would be confused about what it means.

It must be specific so you can figure out how to measure it. If it is not specific how will you measure it.

For example:

You sell an eBook. One of your goals is financial. You might say your goal is to increase sales a lot. What does that mean. Better to say you will increase you annual net sales revenue by 50% over 2008.

You can measure the annual net sales revenue. Hopefully you have those figures from 2008 and are tracking them for 2009. When you reach this goal your business will have grown.

Some Types of Goals

Here are some suggested areas for goals. But please don't be limited by these suggestions. It is your business and no one is in a better position to determine your business goals than you.

Revenue

Autoresponder Signups

Leads

Autoresponder Signups

Visitors

Keyword Ranking

Just be sure you set smart goals that are specific. And be sure to take action to reach your goals.

Until the next time,

Smart Goals

Goal setting is important to your off line business and to your online business. Without goals how will you know what is important and if you have reached it? To improve and grow your business you need goals for your website.

These goals should be smart goals:

Specific

Measurable

Attainable

Realistic

Timely

Have You Set Your Website Goals?

The goals are specific to your business so no one is better qualified to set them than you. You should set a number of yearly and longer goals. Then take action to reach each goal. Measure how far you have come at least each month. Review your findings and take action to improve your results.

Goal setting should not just be a time waster. And it will be a time waster if you don't take the process seriously and take action to reach each goal.

Your business future depends upon smart goals and action to reach them.

Until the next time,
